Interstate moves with an animal are routine, and they go badly mostly when the paperwork or the arrival is left to improvisation. ## Paperwork to carry The vaccination record, including rabies, and a recent health certificate from a registered vet for a long journey. Carry originals, and keep a photograph of each on your phone as a backup. ## The journey itself [image: Pomeranian travelling in a ventilated shoulder carrier] A ventilated carrier the animal can stand and turn around in. A ventilated carrier the animal can stand and turn in, sized for it rather than for the boot. A light meal a few hours before, not immediately before. Water offered at every stop. For a long road journey, plan the stops in advance rather than when someone remembers. ## Heat and timing [image: Dog looking out of a train window on a journey] Travel early or overnight in summer, and never leave a pet in a parked vehicle. Travel early or overnight in summer. A stationary vehicle in afternoon sun becomes dangerous within minutes, and an animal will not always show distress before it is serious. ## The first week at the other end [image: Couple unpacking moving boxes with their dog beside them] Keep routines identical in the first week, and let the pet settle one room at a time. Confine the animal to one or two rooms initially, keep feeding times identical to before the move, and delay introductions to new people. Register with a local vet in the first fortnight and hand over the history. ## Climate change, not just address change Moving from a dry state to a humid one changes the grooming routine immediately. Expect to adjust, and watch the skin and ears in the first month. ## Frequently asked questions ### What documents do I need to move my pet to another state? Carry the vaccination record, including rabies, and a recent health certificate from a registered vet for long journeys. Keep the originals with you and photos of each on your phone. Check your airline's or transporter's requirements before booking. ### How should my pet travel on a long road journey? In a ventilated carrier it can stand and turn around in. Give a light meal a few hours before leaving rather than just before, offer water at every stop, and plan the stops in advance. ### Is it safe to travel with a pet in summer? Travel early in the morning or overnight. Never leave a pet in a parked vehicle, because temperatures inside can become dangerous within minutes, and animals often do not show distress until heatstroke is serious. ### How do I help my pet settle in a new home? Keep it in one or two rooms at first, keep feeding times exactly as before the move, and introduce new people gradually. Register with a local vet within the first two weeks and share the pet's history. ### Will my pet need a different routine after moving? Often, yes. A move from a dry state to a humid one usually means more frequent drying and grooming. Watch the skin and ears closely in the first month.
