Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Homes around Chapad usually come with their own ground, which takes the pressure off a formal exercise plan. A small-sized breed manages this well when the outdoor time is genuinely regular.

Grooming and coat care in Chapad

Let the weather set the schedule, not the calendar. With the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, a Shih Tzu's coat and skin want checking more often through the long monsoon. On a smaller coat, irritation shows up well before matting does. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

Exercise and routine through the long monsoon in Chapad

The long monsoon is the stretch that needs planning. The air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, so keep sessions short and frequent. Consistency does more for a Shih Tzu than intensity ever will. Keep bedding dry and the resting area well-ventilated, especially during the monsoon.

Is the Shih Tzu right for Chapad?

The Shih Tzu does well in Chapad, with one caveat worth knowing up front: the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention. For a playful, loyal, affectionate, small-sized breed that mostly changes when things happen rather than what happens. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Chapad is hottest in April, averaging 41°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from March to May. A Shih Tzu needs real protection from that because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are mild, with January nights around 16°C, so cold is not a concern.

There is no long rainy season; what rain there is falls mostly in October.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are November to January: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
