Grooming and coat care in Chinnagottigallu

Let the weather set the schedule, not the calendar. With the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, a Afghan Hound Puppy's coat and skin want checking more often through the long monsoon. On a larger coat, matting and trapped moisture are what to catch early. Dry the coat and ears thoroughly after baths or rain to prevent fungal and skin issues.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Feeding a large dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In warm and humid conditions water matters as much as food — the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Exercise and routine through the long monsoon in Chinnagottigallu

The long monsoon is the stretch that needs planning. The sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, so split the activity across two cooler outings rather than one long session. Consistency does more for a Afghan Hound Puppy than intensity ever will. Dry the coat and ears thoroughly after baths or rain to prevent fungal and skin issues.

Space and the outdoors with a Afghan Hound Puppy

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a aloof, dignified, independent dog the fit is usually good either way.

Chinnagottigallu is hottest in April, averaging 38°C in the afternoon. A Afghan Hound needs real protection from that because a large body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are mild, with January nights around 16°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from October to November, and October is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Afghan Hound puppy, the easiest months to arrive are January, February, June, July, August and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
