The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a bold, lively, friendly dog the fit is usually good either way.

Exercise and routine through the long monsoon in Munchingi Puttu

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Munchingi Puttu, moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, which makes timing the variable that matters. Several brief outings suit this size better than one long one. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

Health and vet care in Munchingi Puttu

Local climate decides which problems actually turn up. Given moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, the recurring ones here are skin and coat trouble, parasites and hydration — not the whole textbook. Keep vaccination and deworming on schedule, and book the check before the long monsoon rather than during it. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

Feeding a small dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In warm and humid conditions water matters as much as food — moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Summer here peaks in April at about 36°C. That is manageable for a Shih Tzu, but watch it closely because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with December nights around 11°C. A light sweater helps a small Shih Tzu on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from June to October, and August is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are February and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
