The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Feeding a large dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In coastal tropical conditions water matters as much as food — the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Is the Afghan Hound Puppy right for Nandalur?

Nandalur is coastal tropical — the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention — and the Afghan Hound Puppy is a large-sized, aloof, dignified, independent breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size needs its hard exercise moved to the cooler hours. Keep bedding dry and the resting area well-ventilated, especially during the monsoon.

Grooming and coat care in Nandalur

Let the weather set the schedule, not the calendar. With the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, a Afghan Hound Puppy's coat and skin want checking more often through the long monsoon. On a larger coat, matting and trapped moisture are what to catch early. Keep bedding dry and the resting area well-ventilated, especially during the monsoon.

Exercise and routine through the long monsoon in Nandalur

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Nandalur, the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, which makes timing the variable that matters. Two shorter outings work better here for a breed this size. Keep bedding dry and the resting area well-ventilated, especially during the monsoon.

Nandalur is hottest in April, averaging 40°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Afghan Hound needs real protection from that because a large body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters in Nandalur stay warm, with even January nights around 17°C, so there is no cold season to plan for.

The rainy season runs from October to November, and October is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Afghan Hound puppy, the easiest months to arrive in Nandalur are January, February, July, August, September and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
