The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Space and the outdoors with a Newfoundland Puppy

Homes around Therlam usually come with their own ground, which takes the pressure off a formal exercise plan. A breed this size needs that outdoor time to be dependable, not occasional.

Grooming and coat care in Therlam

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Therlam being coastal tropical, the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Stay current on tick and flea prevention, which thrive in warm, damp conditions.

Is the Newfoundland Puppy right for Therlam?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, and a giant-sized dog feels that more than an owner expects. The Newfoundland Puppy adapts well to Therlam on a sensible routine — shorter outings, timed away from the midday heat. Therlam is hottest in April, averaging 38°C in the afternoon. A Newfoundland needs real protection from that because a giant body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are mild, with January nights around 16°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from June to October, and September is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Newfoundland puppy, the easiest months to arrive are November to February: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
