Living with a Shih Tzu in Vepada

Homes here often have more space and independent plots, which gives a Shih Tzu room to move and settle in comfortably. Owners across South India tend to find this dog a bold, lively, friendly companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

Is the Shih Tzu right for Vepada?

The Shih Tzu does well in Vepada, with one caveat worth knowing up front: the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention. For a bold, lively, friendly, small-sized breed that mostly changes when things happen rather than what happens. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Exercise and routine through the long monsoon in Vepada

The long monsoon is the stretch that needs planning. The air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, so keep sessions short and frequent. Consistency does more for a Shih Tzu than intensity ever will. Dry the coat and ears thoroughly after baths or rain to prevent fungal and skin issues.

Feeding a small dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, keep water available and watch intake through the long monsoon.

Vepada is hottest in April, averaging 38°C in the afternoon. A Shih Tzu needs real protection from that because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters in Vepada are mild, with January nights around 17°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from June to October, and September is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive in Vepada are November to January: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
