The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Grooming and coat care in West Godavari

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. West Godavari being coastal tropical, the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Stay current on tick and flea prevention, which thrive in warm, damp conditions.

Health and vet care in West Godavari

Local climate decides which problems actually turn up. Given the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, the recurring ones here are skin and coat trouble, parasites and hydration — not the whole textbook. Keep vaccination and deworming on schedule, and book the check before the long monsoon rather than during it. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

Exercise and routine through the long monsoon in West Godavari

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In West Godavari, the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, which makes timing the variable that matters. Two shorter outings work better here for a breed this size. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

Feeding a giant dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a giant build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In coastal tropical conditions water matters as much as food — the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Summer here peaks in May at about 37°C. That is manageable for a Saint Bernard, but watch it closely because its double coat holds heat close to the body and a giant body sheds heat slowly: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters stay warm, with even January nights around 19°C, so there is no cold season to plan for.

The rainy season runs from July to October, and October is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Saint Bernard puppy, the easiest months to arrive are November to January: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
