Feeding a large dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a large frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, keep water available and watch intake through the long monsoon.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Homes here often have more space and independent plots, which gives a Afghan Hound Puppy room to move and settle in comfortably. Owners in the southern region tend to find this dog a aloof, dignified, independent companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

Summer here peaks in May at about 38°C. That is manageable for a Afghan Hound, but watch it closely because a large body sheds heat slowly: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters stay warm, with even January nights around 20°C, so there is no cold season to plan for.

Most of the year's rain falls in October. Check for ticks after every walk; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Afghan Hound puppy, the easiest months to arrive are January, February, March, June, July and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
