The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Grooming and coat care in Dhubri

Let the weather set the schedule, not the calendar. With near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention, a Shih Tzu's coat and skin want checking more often through the extended rainy season. On a smaller coat, irritation shows up well before matting does. Ensure good airflow indoors to keep the coat and bedding from staying damp.

Feeding a small dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In monsoon-heavy conditions water matters as much as food — near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Is the Shih Tzu right for Dhubri?

The Shih Tzu does well in Dhubri, with one caveat worth knowing up front: near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention. For a playful, loyal, affectionate, small-sized breed that mostly changes when things happen rather than what happens. Ensure good airflow indoors to keep the coat and bedding from staying damp.

Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a playful, loyal, affectionate dog the fit is usually good either way.

Summer here peaks in April at about 34°C. That is manageable for a Shih Tzu, but watch it closely because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 10°C. A light sweater helps a small Shih Tzu on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from April to October, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are February, March, November and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
