Is the Shih Tzu right for Palasbari?

Palasbari is monsoon-heavy — rainfall is among the highest in the country, so wet-weather care is essential — and the Shih Tzu is a small-sized, playful, loyal, affectionate breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size copes well, provided shade and water are always within reach. Maintain strict tick, flea and worm control, which peak in the wet season.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Feeding a small dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because rainfall is among the highest in the country, so wet-weather care is essential, keep water available and watch intake through the extended rainy season.

Exercise and routine through the extended rainy season in Palasbari

The extended rainy season is the stretch that needs planning. Rainfall is among the highest in the country, so wet-weather care is essential, so keep sessions short and frequent. Consistency does more for a Shih Tzu than intensity ever will. Ensure good airflow indoors to keep the coat and bedding from staying damp.

Living with a Shih Tzu in Palasbari

Homes here often have more space and independent plots, which gives a Shih Tzu room to move and settle in comfortably. Owners in the region's hills tend to find this dog a playful, loyal, affectionate companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

Summer here peaks in June at about 34°C. That is manageable for a Shih Tzu, but watch it closely because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 11°C. A light sweater helps a small Shih Tzu on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from April to September, and June is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are February, March, November and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
