Health and vet care in Subansiri (Pt-I)

Local climate decides which problems actually turn up. Given rainfall is among the highest in the country, so wet-weather care is essential, the recurring ones here are skin and coat trouble, parasites and hydration — not the whole textbook. Keep vaccination and deworming on schedule, and book the check before the extended rainy season rather than during it. Ensure good airflow indoors to keep the coat and bedding from staying damp.

Feeding a small dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In monsoon-heavy conditions water matters as much as food — rainfall is among the highest in the country, so wet-weather care is essential, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Summer here peaks in June at about 32°C. That is manageable for a Shih Tzu, but watch it closely because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 11°C. A light sweater helps a small Shih Tzu on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from April to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are February, March, October, November and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
