Living with a Shih Tzu in Tingkhong

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a small-sized breed to exercise at home. Owners in the region's hills tend to find this dog a playful, loyal, affectionate companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Exercise and routine through the extended rainy season in Tingkhong

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Tingkhong, near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention, which makes timing the variable that matters. Several brief outings suit this size better than one long one. Towel-dry after every walk in the rains and check between the toes for irritation.

Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Homes around Tingkhong usually come with their own ground, which takes the pressure off a formal exercise plan. A small-sized breed manages this well when the outdoor time is genuinely regular.

For a playful, loyal, affectionate, small-sized breed that mostly changes when things happen rather than what happens. Maintain strict tick, flea and worm control, which peak in the wet season.

Summer here peaks in June at about 33°C. That is manageable for a Shih Tzu, but watch it closely because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 10°C. A light sweater helps a small Shih Tzu on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from April to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are February, March, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
