Living with a Shih Tzu in Kunkuri

Larger plots and open surroundings make this a comfortable setting for an active Shih Tzu. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Is the Shih Tzu right for Kunkuri?

The Shih Tzu does well in Kunkuri, with one caveat worth knowing up front: extreme summer heat and a brisk winter both need planning across the year. For a playful, loyal, affectionate, small-sized breed that mostly changes when things happen rather than what happens. Shift walks to early morning and late evening through the peak summer weeks.

Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a playful, loyal, affectionate dog the fit is usually good either way.

Feeding a small dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In continental plains conditions water matters as much as food — extreme summer heat and a brisk winter both need planning across the year, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Kunkuri is hottest in May, averaging 41°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Shih Tzu needs real protection from that because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 9°C. A light sweater helps a small Shih Tzu on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive in Kunkuri are February, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
