The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Feeding a small dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because extreme summer heat and a brisk winter both need planning across the year, keep water available and watch intake through the peak summer and winter swings.

Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Homes around Raipur usually come with their own ground, which takes the pressure off a formal exercise plan. A small-sized breed manages this well when the outdoor time is genuinely regular.

Living with a Shih Tzu in Raipur

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a small-sized breed to exercise at home. Owners in central India tend to find this dog a playful, loyal, affectionate companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

Health and vet care in Raipur

Local climate decides which problems actually turn up. Given extreme summer heat and a brisk winter both need planning across the year, the recurring ones here are skin and coat trouble, parasites and hydration — not the whole textbook. Keep vaccination and deworming on schedule, and book the check before the peak summer and winter swings rather than during it. Keep deworming and vaccination on schedule — seasonal changes can stress the immune system.

Raipur is hottest in May, averaging 43°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Shih Tzu needs real protection from that because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 11°C. A light sweater helps a small Shih Tzu on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive in Raipur are February, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
