Exercise and routine through the dry summer months in Ahmedabad

The dry summer months is the stretch that needs planning. Daytime temperatures climb high for much of the year, which shapes daily routines, so split the activity across two cooler outings rather than one long session. Consistency does more for a Golden Retriever than intensity ever will. Keep unlimited fresh water available and add a cooling mat or shaded resting spot.

Apartment living with a Golden Retriever

Flats are the norm in Ahmedabad, so indoor enrichment carries real weight — puzzle feeders, chew toys, and a resting spot away from through-traffic. A breed this size needs that outdoor time to be dependable, not occasional.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Is the Golden Retriever right for Ahmedabad?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here daytime temperatures climb high for much of the year, which shapes daily routines, and a large-sized dog feels that more than an owner expects. The Golden Retriever adapts well to Ahmedabad on a sensible routine — shorter outings, timed away from the midday heat. A light summer trim (for double-coated breeds, never shave to the skin) helps comfort.

Grooming and coat care in Ahmedabad

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Ahmedabad being warm and arid, daytime temperatures climb high for much of the year, which shapes daily routines, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. A light summer trim (for double-coated breeds, never shave to the skin) helps comfort.

Ahmedabad is hottest in May, averaging 43°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to June. A Golden Retriever needs real protection from that because its double coat holds heat close to the body and a large body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 11°C.

The rainy season runs from July to August, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Golden Retriever puppy, the easiest months to arrive are November to January: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
