The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Living with a Pug Puppy in Dabhoi

Homes here often have more space and independent plots, which gives a Pug Puppy room to move and settle in comfortably. Owners in the west tend to find this dog a family friendly, good with kids companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

Feeding a small dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In hot semi-desert conditions water matters as much as food — summers are long and intense, so heat management is the single biggest priority, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Dabhoi is hottest in May, averaging 42°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Pug needs real protection from that because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are mild, with January nights around 13°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Pug puppy, the easiest months to arrive are December to January: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
