Living with a Afghan Hound Puppy in Kanina

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a large-sized breed to exercise at home. Owners across North India tend to find this dog a aloof, dignified, independent companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

Exercise and routine through the dry summer months in Kanina

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Kanina, daytime temperatures climb high for much of the year, which shapes daily routines, which makes timing the variable that matters. Two shorter outings work better here for a breed this size. Walk early in the morning or after sunset when the ground is cool, never on hot pavement.

Is the Afghan Hound Puppy right for Kanina?

The Afghan Hound Puppy does well in Kanina, with one caveat worth knowing up front: daytime temperatures climb high for much of the year, which shapes daily routines. For a aloof, dignified, independent, large-sized breed that mostly changes when things happen rather than what happens. Walk early in the morning or after sunset when the ground is cool, never on hot pavement.

Feeding a large dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In hot, dry conditions water matters as much as food — daytime temperatures climb high for much of the year, which shapes daily routines, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Kanina is hottest in May, averaging 42°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to June. A Afghan Hound needs real protection from that because a large body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 6°C.

There is no long rainy season; what rain there is falls mostly in August.

For a new Afghan Hound puppy, the easiest months to arrive are September to March: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
