Exercise and routine through the cold winter season in Kotgarh

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. Keep up daily exercise — the cool weather is ideal for longer, more active walks.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a large-sized breed to exercise at home. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Feeding a large dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In cold mountain conditions water matters as much as food — winters get genuinely cold, so warmth and joint care take priority, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 26°C in June, so heat is rarely the problem for a Afghan Hound that it is on the plains.

Winter nights drop to about -1°C in January. A Afghan Hound copes well with cold, but a puppy still needs a warm, draught-free bed for its first winter.

The rainy season runs from July to August, and August is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Afghan Hound puppy, the easiest months to arrive are April, May and October: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
