The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Feeding a large dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a large frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because crisp hill weather is comfortable for most dogs but harsh for short-coated ones in winter, keep water available and watch intake through the cold winter season.

Living with a Golden Retriever in Kotli

Larger plots and open surroundings make this a comfortable setting for an active Golden Retriever. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Health and vet care in Kotli

Preventive care in Kotli is largely a matter of anticipating the cold winter season. Parasite control and skin checks earn their keep here more than they would elsewhere. The vaccination record travels with the puppy; staying on schedule is the single best habit there is. Provide a warm, draught-free sleeping spot and a coat for short-haired breeds in winter.

Grooming and coat care in Kotli

Let the weather set the schedule, not the calendar. With crisp hill weather is comfortable for most dogs but harsh for short-coated ones in winter, a Golden Retriever's coat and skin want checking more often through the cold winter season. On a larger coat, matting and trapped moisture are what to catch early. Keep up daily exercise — the cool weather is ideal for longer, more active walks.

Winter nights in Kotli drop to about -3°C in January. A Golden Retriever copes well with cold, but a puppy still needs a warm, draught-free bed for its first winter.

The rainy season runs from July to August, and August is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.
