Living with a Shih Tzu in Nadaun

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a small-sized breed to exercise at home. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Is the Shih Tzu right for Nadaun?

Nadaun is cold mountain — crisp hill weather is comfortable for most dogs but harsh for short-coated ones in winter — and the Shih Tzu is a small-sized, bold, lively, friendly breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size copes well, provided shade and water are always within reach. Keep up daily exercise — the cool weather is ideal for longer, more active walks.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Exercise and routine through the cold winter season in Nadaun

The cold winter season is the stretch that needs planning. Crisp hill weather is comfortable for most dogs but harsh for short-coated ones in winter, so keep sessions short and frequent. Consistency does more for a Shih Tzu than intensity ever will. Provide a warm, draught-free sleeping spot and a coat for short-haired breeds in winter.

Feeding a small dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because crisp hill weather is comfortable for most dogs but harsh for short-coated ones in winter, keep water available and watch intake through the cold winter season.

Nadaun is hottest in June, averaging 39°C in the afternoon. A Shih Tzu needs real protection from that because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 9°C. A light sweater helps a small Shih Tzu on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from July to August, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are March, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
