Feeding a small dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because winters get genuinely cold, so warmth and joint care take priority, keep water available and watch intake through the cold winter season.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Exercise and routine through the cold winter season in Rey

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Rey, winters get genuinely cold, so warmth and joint care take priority, which makes timing the variable that matters. Several brief outings suit this size better than one long one. Check paws for cracking and ice between toes during the coldest months.

Grooming and coat care in Rey

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Rey being temperate highland, winters get genuinely cold, so warmth and joint care take priority, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Check paws for cracking and ice between toes during the coldest months.

Living with a Shih Tzu in Rey

Homes here often have more space and independent plots, which gives a Shih Tzu room to move and settle in comfortably. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Rey is hottest in June, averaging 41°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from May to June. A Shih Tzu needs real protection from that because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 8°C. A light sweater helps a small Shih Tzu on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from July to August, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive in Rey are March, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
