The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Exercise and routine through the cold winter season in Shalai

The cold winter season is the stretch that needs planning. The cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others, so split the activity across two cooler outings rather than one long session. Consistency does more for a Afghan Hound Puppy than intensity ever will. Check paws for cracking and ice between toes during the coldest months.

Feeding a large dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In temperate highland conditions water matters as much as food — the cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Grooming and coat care in Shalai

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Shalai being temperate highland, the cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Older pets may need joint support as cold can stiffen movement.

Is the Afghan Hound Puppy right for Shalai?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here the cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others, and a large-sized dog feels that more than an owner expects. The Afghan Hound Puppy adapts well to Shalai on a sensible routine — shorter outings, timed away from the midday heat. Older pets may need joint support as cold can stiffen movement.

The city sits at about 1,760 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 31°C in May, so heat is rarely the problem for a Afghan Hound that it is on the plains.

Winter nights drop to about -0°C in January. A Afghan Hound copes well with cold, but a puppy still needs a warm, draught-free bed for its first winter.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and August is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Afghan Hound puppy, the easiest months to arrive are March, April, May and October: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
