Exercise and routine through the cold winter season in Theog

The cold winter season is the stretch that needs planning. Crisp hill weather is comfortable for most dogs but harsh for short-coated ones in winter, so split the activity across two cooler outings rather than one long session. Consistency does more for a Afghan Hound Puppy than intensity ever will. Provide a warm, draught-free sleeping spot and a coat for short-haired breeds in winter.

Is the Afghan Hound Puppy right for Theog?

The Afghan Hound Puppy does well in Theog, with one caveat worth knowing up front: crisp hill weather is comfortable for most dogs but harsh for short-coated ones in winter. For a aloof, dignified, independent, large-sized breed that mostly changes when things happen rather than what happens. Older pets may need joint support as cold can stiffen movement.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Space and the outdoors with a Afghan Hound Puppy

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a aloof, dignified, independent dog the fit is usually good either way.

Feeding a large dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In temperate highland conditions water matters as much as food — crisp hill weather is comfortable for most dogs but harsh for short-coated ones in winter, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 26°C in June, so heat is rarely the problem for a Afghan Hound that it is on the plains.

Winter nights drop to about -2°C in January. A Afghan Hound copes well with cold, but a puppy still needs a warm, draught-free bed for its first winter.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and August is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Afghan Hound puppy, the easiest months to arrive are April, May and October: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
