The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Homes around Doda usually come with their own ground, which takes the pressure off a formal exercise plan. A small-sized breed manages this well when the outdoor time is genuinely regular.

Is the Shih Tzu right for Doda?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here crisp hill weather is comfortable for most dogs but harsh for short-coated ones in winter, and a small-sized dog feels that more than an owner expects. The Shih Tzu adapts well to Doda on a sensible routine — steady hydration and shade rather than reduced activity. Keep up daily exercise — the cool weather is ideal for longer, more active walks.

Living with a Shih Tzu in Doda

Larger plots and open surroundings make this a comfortable setting for an active Shih Tzu. Owners in the northern region tend to find this dog a playful, loyal, affectionate companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

Health and vet care in Doda

Preventive care in Doda is largely a matter of anticipating the cold winter season. Parasite control and skin checks earn their keep here more than they would elsewhere. The vaccination record travels with the puppy; staying on schedule is the single best habit there is. Keep up daily exercise — the cool weather is ideal for longer, more active walks.

The city sits at about 1,191 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summer here peaks in June at about 34°C. That is manageable for a Shih Tzu, but watch it closely because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winter nights fall to about 4°C in January. A Shih Tzu feels that: bedding raised off the floor, a sweater or warm cover at night, and a room kept out of the draught.

The rainy season runs from July to August, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are April, May, September and October: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
