The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Space and the outdoors with a Dachshund Puppy

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a family friendly, good with kids dog the fit is usually good either way.

Feeding a medium dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a medium build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In temperate highland conditions water matters as much as food — crisp hill weather is comfortable for most dogs but harsh for short-coated ones in winter, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Exercise and routine through the cold winter season in Handwara

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Handwara, crisp hill weather is comfortable for most dogs but harsh for short-coated ones in winter, which makes timing the variable that matters. Several brief outings suit this size better than one long one. Check paws for cracking and ice between toes during the coldest months.

Health and vet care in Handwara

Local climate decides which problems actually turn up. Given crisp hill weather is comfortable for most dogs but harsh for short-coated ones in winter, the recurring ones here are skin and coat trouble, parasites and hydration — not the whole textbook. Keep vaccination and deworming on schedule, and book the check before the cold winter season rather than during it. Check paws for cracking and ice between toes during the coldest months.

The city sits at about 1,606 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summer here peaks in July at about 32°C. That is manageable for a Dachshund: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winter nights fall to about -2°C in January. A Dachshund feels that: bedding raised off the floor, a sweater or warm cover at night, and a room kept out of the draught.

There is no long rainy season; what rain there is falls mostly in February.

For a new Dachshund puppy, the easiest months to arrive are May to September: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
