The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Feeding a large dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a large frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others, keep water available and watch intake through the cold winter season.

Is the Golden Retriever right for Pouni?

Pouni is temperate highland — the cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others — and the Golden Retriever is a large-sized, family friendly, good with kids breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size needs its hard exercise moved to the cooler hours. Check paws for cracking and ice between toes during the coldest months.

Living with a Golden Retriever in Pouni

Larger plots and open surroundings make this a comfortable setting for an active Golden Retriever. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Health and vet care in Pouni

Preventive care in Pouni is largely a matter of anticipating the cold winter season. Parasite control and skin checks earn their keep here more than they would elsewhere. The vaccination record travels with the puppy; staying on schedule is the single best habit there is. Check paws for cracking and ice between toes during the coldest months.

Summer here peaks in June at about 35°C. That is manageable for a Golden Retriever, but watch it closely because its double coat holds heat close to the body and a large body sheds heat slowly: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winter nights drop to about 3°C in January. A Golden Retriever copes well with cold, but a puppy still needs a warm, draught-free bed for its first winter.

The rainy season runs from July to August, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Golden Retriever puppy, the easiest months to arrive are March, April, September, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
