Grooming and coat care in Bhalki

Let the weather set the schedule, not the calendar. With comfortable temperatures for most of the year make routine care straightforward, a Shih Tzu's coat and skin want checking more often through the brief pre-monsoon heat. On a smaller coat, irritation shows up well before matting does. Take advantage of the mild weather with consistent daily walks and play.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Exercise and routine through the brief pre-monsoon heat in Bhalki

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Bhalki, comfortable temperatures for most of the year make routine care straightforward, which makes timing the variable that matters. Several brief outings suit this size better than one long one. Maintain a regular grooming routine suited to the breed's coat.

Feeding a small dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In moderate Deccan conditions water matters as much as food — comfortable temperatures for most of the year make routine care straightforward, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Homes around Bhalki usually come with their own ground, which takes the pressure off a formal exercise plan. A small-sized breed manages this well when the outdoor time is genuinely regular.

Bhalki is hottest in May, averaging 40°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Shih Tzu needs real protection from that because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters in Bhalki are mild, with December nights around 13°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from July to September, and August is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive in Bhalki are October to January: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
