The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Exercise and routine through the brief pre-monsoon heat in Dharwad

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Dharwad, comfortable temperatures for most of the year make routine care straightforward, which makes timing the variable that matters. Two shorter outings work better here for a breed this size. Take advantage of the mild weather with consistent daily walks and play.

Is the Newfoundland Puppy right for Dharwad?

Dharwad is moderate Deccan — comfortable temperatures for most of the year make routine care straightforward — and the Newfoundland Puppy is a giant-sized, gentle, patient, calm breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size needs its hard exercise moved to the cooler hours. Provide shade and water during the short hot spell before the monsoon.

Feeding a giant dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a giant build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In moderate Deccan conditions water matters as much as food — comfortable temperatures for most of the year make routine care straightforward, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Summer here peaks in April at about 37°C. That is manageable for a Newfoundland, but watch it closely because a giant body sheds heat slowly: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters are mild, with January nights around 14°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Newfoundland puppy, the easiest months to arrive are January, February, May, October, November and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
