Is the Shih Tzu right for Hangal?

Hangal is mild tropical plateau — the plateau climate is relatively moderate, which suits a wide range of breeds — and the Shih Tzu is a small-sized, playful, loyal, affectionate breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size copes well, provided shade and water are always within reach. Take advantage of the mild weather with consistent daily walks and play.

Feeding a small dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the plateau climate is relatively moderate, which suits a wide range of breeds, keep water available and watch intake through the brief pre-monsoon heat.

Grooming and coat care in Hangal

Hangal being mild tropical plateau, the plateau climate is relatively moderate, which suits a wide range of breeds, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Take advantage of the mild weather with consistent daily walks and play.

Summer here peaks in April at about 37°C. That is manageable for a Shih Tzu, but watch it closely because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters are mild, with January nights around 15°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are November to January: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
