Is the Shih Tzu right for Ponnampet?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here the plateau climate is relatively moderate, which suits a wide range of breeds, and a small-sized dog feels that more than an owner expects. The Shih Tzu adapts well to Ponnampet on a sensible routine — steady hydration and shade rather than reduced activity. Take advantage of the mild weather with consistent daily walks and play.

Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a playful, loyal, affectionate dog the fit is usually good either way.

Living with a Shih Tzu in Ponnampet

Larger plots and open surroundings make this a comfortable setting for an active Shih Tzu. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Health and vet care in Ponnampet

Preventive care in Ponnampet is largely a matter of anticipating the brief pre-monsoon heat. Parasite control and skin checks earn their keep here more than they would elsewhere. The vaccination record travels with the puppy; staying on schedule is the single best habit there is. Provide shade and water during the short hot spell before the monsoon.

Summer here peaks in March at about 34°C. That is manageable for a Shih Tzu, but watch it closely because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters are mild, with January nights around 14°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from May to October, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are November to February: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
