Feeding a large dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a large frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the plateau climate is relatively moderate, which suits a wide range of breeds, keep water available and watch intake through the brief pre-monsoon heat.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Exercise and routine through the brief pre-monsoon heat in Rattihalli

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Rattihalli, the plateau climate is relatively moderate, which suits a wide range of breeds, which makes timing the variable that matters. Two shorter outings work better here for a breed this size. Take advantage of the mild weather with consistent daily walks and play.

Is the Golden Retriever right for Rattihalli?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here the plateau climate is relatively moderate, which suits a wide range of breeds, and a large-sized dog feels that more than an owner expects. The Golden Retriever adapts well to Rattihalli on a sensible routine — shorter outings, timed away from the midday heat. Provide shade and water during the short hot spell before the monsoon.

Summer here peaks in April at about 37°C. That is manageable for a Golden Retriever, but watch it closely because its double coat holds heat close to the body and a large body sheds heat slowly: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters are mild, with January nights around 15°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Golden Retriever puppy, the easiest months to arrive are November to January: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
