The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Is the Golden Retriever right for Kanayannur?

Kanayannur is humid coastal — moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips — and the Golden Retriever is a large-sized, family friendly, good with kids breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size needs its hard exercise moved to the cooler hours. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

Feeding a large dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a large frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, keep water available and watch intake through the long monsoon.

Health and vet care in Kanayannur

Preventive care in Kanayannur is largely a matter of anticipating the long monsoon. Parasite control and skin checks earn their keep here more than they would elsewhere. The vaccination record travels with the puppy; staying on schedule is the single best habit there is. Dry the coat and ears thoroughly after baths or rain to prevent fungal and skin issues.

Summer here peaks in March at about 33°C. That is manageable for a Golden Retriever, but watch it closely because its double coat holds heat close to the body and a large body sheds heat slowly: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters stay warm, with even January nights around 24°C, so there is no cold season to plan for.

The rainy season runs from May to November, and June is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Golden Retriever puppy, the easiest months to arrive are December to January: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
