Feeding a small dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In coastal tropical conditions water matters as much as food — moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Grooming and coat care in Minicoy

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Minicoy being coastal tropical, moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Dry the coat and ears thoroughly after baths or rain to prevent fungal and skin issues.

Health and vet care in Minicoy

Local climate decides which problems actually turn up. Given moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, the recurring ones here are skin and coat trouble, parasites and hydration — not the whole textbook. Keep vaccination and deworming on schedule, and book the check before the long monsoon rather than during it. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

Living with a Shih Tzu in Minicoy

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a small-sized breed to exercise at home. Owners in the southern region tend to find this dog a bold, lively, friendly companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 30°C in May, so heat is rarely the problem for a Shih Tzu that it is on the plains.

Winters stay warm, with even January nights around 27°C, so there is no cold season to plan for.

The rainy season runs from May to August, and June is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are November to April: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
