Given the climate swings from hot summers to cool winters, so care changes with the season, the recurring ones here are skin and coat trouble, parasites and hydration — not the whole textbook. Keep vaccination and deworming on schedule, and book the check before the peak summer and winter swings rather than during it. Keep deworming and vaccination on schedule — seasonal changes can stress the immune system.

Feeding a small dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In subtropical plains conditions water matters as much as food — the climate swings from hot summers to cool winters, so care changes with the season, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a bold, lively, friendly dog the fit is usually good either way.

Jatara is hottest in May, averaging 44°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to June. A Shih Tzu needs real protection from that because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 9°C. A light sweater helps a small Shih Tzu on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from July to August, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are October to November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
