Living with a Afghan Hound Puppy in Kanadia

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a large-sized breed to exercise at home. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Exercise and routine through the peak summer and winter swings in Kanadia

The peak summer and winter swings is the stretch that needs planning. Extreme summer heat and a brisk winter both need planning across the year, so split the activity across two cooler outings rather than one long session. Consistency does more for a Afghan Hound Puppy than intensity ever will. Watch for seasonal coat shedding as temperatures change and brush accordingly.

Feeding a large dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a large frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because extreme summer heat and a brisk winter both need planning across the year, keep water available and watch intake through the peak summer and winter swings.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Space and the outdoors with a Afghan Hound Puppy

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a aloof, dignified, independent dog the fit is usually good either way.

Kanadia is hottest in May, averaging 42°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Afghan Hound needs real protection from that because a large body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 11°C.

The rainy season runs from July to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Afghan Hound puppy, the easiest months to arrive are October to February: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
