Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a bold, lively, friendly dog the fit is usually good either way.

Is the Shih Tzu right for Kotma?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here extreme summer heat and a brisk winter both need planning across the year, and a small-sized dog feels that more than an owner expects. The Shih Tzu adapts well to Kotma on a sensible routine — steady hydration and shade rather than reduced activity. Provide shade and constant water in summer; a warm bed and blanket in winter.

Feeding a small dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because extreme summer heat and a brisk winter both need planning across the year, keep water available and watch intake through the peak summer and winter swings.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Living with a Shih Tzu in Kotma

Larger plots and open surroundings make this a comfortable setting for an active Shih Tzu. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Kotma is hottest in May, averaging 41°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Shih Tzu needs real protection from that because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 9°C. A light sweater helps a small Shih Tzu on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and August is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are February, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
