Is the Shih Tzu right for Kusmi?

Kusmi is continental plains — the wide seasonal range means both cooling in summer and warmth in winter matter — and the Shih Tzu is a small-sized, playful, affectionate, gentle breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size copes well, provided shade and water are always within reach. Shift walks to early morning and late evening through the peak summer weeks.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Health and vet care in Kusmi

Preventive care in Kusmi is largely a matter of anticipating the peak summer and winter swings. Parasite control and skin checks earn their keep here more than they would elsewhere. The vaccination record travels with the puppy; staying on schedule is the single best habit there is. Provide shade and constant water in summer; a warm bed and blanket in winter.

Living with a Shih Tzu in Kusmi

Homes here often have more space and independent plots, which gives a Shih Tzu room to move and settle in comfortably. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Feeding a small dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In continental plains conditions water matters as much as food — the wide seasonal range means both cooling in summer and warmth in winter matter, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Kusmi is hottest in May, averaging 43°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Shih Tzu needs real protection from that because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 8°C. A light sweater helps a small Shih Tzu on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive in Kusmi are October to November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
