Grooming and coat care in Alibag

Let the weather set the schedule, not the calendar. With the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, a Shih Tzu's coat and skin want checking more often through the long monsoon. On a smaller coat, irritation shows up well before matting does. Dry the coat and ears thoroughly after baths or rain to prevent fungal and skin issues.

Alibag is hottest in April, averaging 38°C in the afternoon. A Shih Tzu needs real protection from that because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are mild, with January nights around 17°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are October to January: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
