Is the Pomeranian Puppy right for Pune?

Pune is warm and humid — moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips — and the Pomeranian Puppy is a small-sized, vivacious, bold, intelligent breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size copes well, provided shade and water are always within reach. Dry the coat and ears thoroughly after baths or rain to prevent fungal and skin issues.

Living with a Pomeranian Puppy in Pune

Most homes here are apartments and gated flats, so a small-sized breed that adapts to indoor living is a practical choice. In a city, the routine has to be deliberate — fixed walk times, a defined resting spot.

Space is the binding constraint in a city, and a settled temperament matters more in a shared building than anywhere else. For a vivacious, bold, intelligent dog the fit is usually good either way.

Grooming and coat care in Pune

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Pune being warm and humid, moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Dry the coat and ears thoroughly after baths or rain to prevent fungal and skin issues.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Pune is hottest in April, averaging 38°C in the afternoon. A Pomeranian needs real protection from that because its double coat holds heat close to the body: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are mild, with January nights around 12°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Pomeranian puppy, the easiest months to arrive are October to February: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
