Grooming and coat care in Laskein

Let the weather set the schedule, not the calendar. With near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention, a Saint Bernard Puppy's coat and skin want checking more often through the extended rainy season. On a larger coat, matting and trapped moisture are what to catch early. Maintain strict tick, flea and worm control, which peak in the wet season.

Is the Saint Bernard Puppy right for Laskein?

Laskein is lush, wet tropical — near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention — and the Saint Bernard Puppy is a giant-sized, family friendly, good with kids breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size needs its hard exercise moved to the cooler hours. Maintain strict tick, flea and worm control, which peak in the wet season.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Feeding a giant dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a giant frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention, keep water available and watch intake through the extended rainy season.

The extended rainy season is the stretch that needs planning. Near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention, so split the activity across two cooler outings rather than one long session. Consistency does more for a Saint Bernard Puppy than intensity ever will. Maintain strict tick, flea and worm control, which peak in the wet season.

The city sits at about 1,243 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 25°C in May, so heat is rarely the problem for a Saint Bernard that it is on the plains.

Winter nights drop to about 4°C in January. A Saint Bernard copes well with cold, but a puppy still needs a warm, draught-free bed for its first winter.

The rainy season runs from April to September, and June is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Saint Bernard puppy, the easiest months to arrive are March and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
