The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Is the Saint Bernard Puppy right for Mawlai?

Mawlai is lush, wet tropical — the green, rainy climate is mild but demands dry shelter and grooming discipline — and the Saint Bernard Puppy is a giant-sized, family friendly, good with kids breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size needs its hard exercise moved to the cooler hours. Maintain strict tick, flea and worm control, which peak in the wet season.

Exercise and routine through the extended rainy season in Mawlai

The extended rainy season is the stretch that needs planning. The green, rainy climate is mild but demands dry shelter and grooming discipline, so split the activity across two cooler outings rather than one long session. Consistency does more for a Saint Bernard Puppy than intensity ever will. Towel-dry after every walk in the rains and check between the toes for irritation.

Feeding a giant dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a giant build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In lush, wet tropical conditions water matters as much as food — the green, rainy climate is mild but demands dry shelter and grooming discipline, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

The city sits at about 1,216 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 25°C in August, so heat is rarely the problem for a Saint Bernard that it is on the plains.

Winter nights drop to about 5°C in January. A Saint Bernard copes well with cold, but a puppy still needs a warm, draught-free bed for its first winter.

The rainy season runs from April to October, and June is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Saint Bernard puppy, the easiest months to arrive are February, March, November and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
