The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Grooming and coat care in Siju

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Siju being lush, wet tropical, rainfall is among the highest in the country, so wet-weather care is essential, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Towel-dry after every walk in the rains and check between the toes for irritation.

Living with a Afghan Hound Puppy in Siju

Larger plots and open surroundings make this a comfortable setting for an active Afghan Hound Puppy. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Is the Afghan Hound Puppy right for Siju?

Siju is lush, wet tropical — rainfall is among the highest in the country, so wet-weather care is essential — and the Afghan Hound Puppy is a large-sized, aloof, dignified, independent breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size needs its hard exercise moved to the cooler hours. Towel-dry after every walk in the rains and check between the toes for irritation.

Feeding a large dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In lush, wet tropical conditions water matters as much as food — rainfall is among the highest in the country, so wet-weather care is essential, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Summer here peaks in April at about 32°C. That is manageable for a Afghan Hound, but watch it closely because a large body sheds heat slowly: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 9°C.

The rainy season runs from April to October, and June is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Afghan Hound puppy, the easiest months to arrive are November to March: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
