Exercise and routine through the extended rainy season in West Khasi Hills

The extended rainy season is the stretch that needs planning. Near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention, so split the activity across two cooler outings rather than one long session. Consistency does more for a Golden Retriever than intensity ever will. Keep a dry, raised resting area — prolonged damp leads to skin and paw problems.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 26°C in August, so heat is rarely the problem for a Golden Retriever that it is on the plains.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 6°C.

The rainy season runs from April to October, and June is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Golden Retriever puppy, the easiest months to arrive are November to March: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
