Grooming and coat care in Saitual

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Maintain strict tick, flea and worm control, which peak in the wet season.

Living with a Shih Tzu in Saitual

Homes here often have more space and independent plots, which gives a Shih Tzu room to move and settle in comfortably. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Feeding a small dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In high-rainfall tropical conditions water matters as much as food — the green, rainy climate is mild but demands dry shelter and grooming discipline, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

The city sits at about 969 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 29°C in April, so heat is rarely the problem for a Shih Tzu that it is on the plains.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 8°C. A light sweater helps a small Shih Tzu on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from May to August, and June is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are March, April, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
