The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

The extended rainy season is the stretch that needs planning. Rainfall is among the highest in the country, so wet-weather care is essential, so keep sessions short and frequent. Consistency does more for a Dachshund Puppy than intensity ever will. Ensure good airflow indoors to keep the coat and bedding from staying damp.

The city sits at about 1,470 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 26°C in June, so heat is rarely the problem for a Dachshund that it is on the plains.

Winter nights fall to about 4°C in January. A Dachshund feels that: bedding raised off the floor, a sweater or warm cover at night, and a room kept out of the draught.

The rainy season runs from May to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Dachshund puppy, the easiest months to arrive are October: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
