Feeding a small dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the green, rainy climate is mild but demands dry shelter and grooming discipline, keep water available and watch intake through the extended rainy season.

Exercise and routine through the extended rainy season in Chingmei

The extended rainy season is the stretch that needs planning. The green, rainy climate is mild but demands dry shelter and grooming discipline, so keep sessions short and frequent. Consistency does more for a Shih Tzu than intensity ever will. Towel-dry after every walk in the rains and check between the toes for irritation.

Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a playful, loyal, affectionate dog the fit is usually good either way.

The city sits at about 1,817 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 24°C in June, so heat is rarely the problem for a Shih Tzu that it is on the plains.

Winter nights fall to about 2°C in January. A Shih Tzu feels that: bedding raised off the floor, a sweater or warm cover at night, and a room kept out of the draught.

The rainy season runs from May to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are October: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
