Grooming and coat care in Chizami

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Chizami being high-rainfall tropical, rainfall is among the highest in the country, so wet-weather care is essential, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Maintain strict tick, flea and worm control, which peak in the wet season.

Is the Shih Tzu right for Chizami?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here rainfall is among the highest in the country, so wet-weather care is essential, and a small-sized dog feels that more than an owner expects. The Shih Tzu adapts well to Chizami on a sensible routine — steady hydration and shade rather than reduced activity. Maintain strict tick, flea and worm control, which peak in the wet season.

Feeding a small dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In high-rainfall tropical conditions water matters as much as food — rainfall is among the highest in the country, so wet-weather care is essential, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a playful, affectionate, gentle dog the fit is usually good either way.

Living with a Shih Tzu in Chizami

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a small-sized breed to exercise at home. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

The city sits at about 1,394 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 27°C in June, so heat is rarely the problem for a Shih Tzu that it is on the plains.

Winter nights fall to about 5°C in January. A Shih Tzu feels that: bedding raised off the floor, a sweater or warm cover at night, and a room kept out of the draught.

The rainy season runs from May to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are April and October: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
