Exercise and routine through the extended rainy season in Jakhama

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Jakhama, rainfall is among the highest in the country, so wet-weather care is essential, which makes timing the variable that matters. Two shorter outings work better here for a breed this size. Ensure good airflow indoors to keep the coat and bedding from staying damp.

Larger plots and open surroundings make this a comfortable setting for an active Golden Retriever. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Feeding a large dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a large frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because rainfall is among the highest in the country, so wet-weather care is essential, keep water available and watch intake through the extended rainy season.

Grooming and coat care in Jakhama

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Jakhama being monsoon-heavy, rainfall is among the highest in the country, so wet-weather care is essential, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. The city sits at about 2,217 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 22°C in June, so heat is rarely the problem for a Golden Retriever that it is on the plains.

Winter nights drop to about -1°C in January. A Golden Retriever copes well with cold, but a puppy still needs a warm, draught-free bed for its first winter.

The rainy season runs from May to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Golden Retriever puppy, the easiest months to arrive are April and October: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
