Living with a Shih Tzu in Medziphema

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a small-sized breed to exercise at home. Owners in the region's hills tend to find this dog a bold, lively, friendly companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Homes around Medziphema usually come with their own ground, which takes the pressure off a formal exercise plan. A small-sized breed manages this well when the outdoor time is genuinely regular.

Grooming and coat care in Medziphema

Let the weather set the schedule, not the calendar. With near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention, a Shih Tzu's coat and skin want checking more often through the extended rainy season. On a smaller coat, irritation shows up well before matting does. Maintain strict tick, flea and worm control, which peak in the wet season.

Summer here peaks in May at about 32°C. That is manageable for a Shih Tzu, but watch it closely because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 9°C. A light sweater helps a small Shih Tzu on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from May to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are March, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
